Session 1: Benefits, Limitation, and the ROI of Drones for Heavy Civil Contractors

Available here on-demand

There is a lot of misunderstanding in the industry about the rules, benefits and barriers of using Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), commonly referred to as “drones” for construction. Dr. Joseph Burgett of Clemson University will speak to us about how off-the-self drones are being used to support jobsite activities and provide added value to clients. He will discuss the specifics of what is needed to start using this tool and the benefits real-world contractors are getting from using this technology. In the discussion, Dr. Burgett will elaborate on the barriers to entry and the cost of starting using the technology the right way. He will provide an overview of the FAA regulations that govern commercial drone use. Dr. Burgett will also tell us what we need to know about the new FAA rules that are significantly expanding how drones can be used.

Learning objectives:

  • How are contractors using drones
  • Barriers and cost to using drones
  • Overview of the regulations that govern commercial drone use

Speaker:

Joseph M. Burgett, PhD, Associate Professor, Clemson University
