HNTB Corp. has been selected by the North Carolina Turnpike Authority (NCTA) as the team of choice for a two-year general engineering consulting contract. HNTB will serve as an extension of the authority’s staff in studying, constructing and operating toll facilities in the state.
The contract also provided two one-year options for extension.
HNTB, as the prime consultant, will assist NCTA with planning, design, construction, operation and maintenance of up to three toll roads in the state, as well as studying, planning, developing and preparing preliminary designs for three additional toll roads. This work is the result of state legislation passed in 2002 that allows for the creation of toll roads and toll bridges in North Carolina.
The three candidate projects expected to top the priority list include the Garden Parkway in the Charlotte area, Triangle Parkway in the Research Triangle Park area and Cape Fear Skyway in Wilmington. The combined projects involve 35.5 miles of four-lane divided roadway. There are another 13 projects on the state’s list that HNTB will likely screen.
