Georgia DOT reveals plans for I-285 toll lanes along metro Atlanta region

The I-285 Top End Express Lanes project would add two new elevated, barrier-separated express lanes in both directions of I-285

The Georgia DOT (GDOT) is planning to build new toll lanes along the top end of I-285—also known as The Perimeter—in the metro Atlanta region for a $4.6 billion expansion project.

According to GDOT, the I-285 top end in metro Atlanta is one of the most heavily traveled and congested interstate highways in the U.S., with more than 240,000 vehicles traveling across the stretch of highway every weekday.

The I-285 Top End Express Lanes project would add two new elevated, barrier-separated express lanes in both directions of I-285, alongside the existing general-purpose lanes.

The project proposes to construct express lanes along I-285 from west of Paces Ferry Road in Cobb County to Henderson Road in DeKalb County, and a section along S.R. 400 from south of the Glenridge Connector to the vicinity of the North Springs MARTA Station. The proposed express lanes would improve mobility and travel time reliability along the I-285 corridor and become part of the larger Georgia Express Lanes network.

Currently, engineering, environmental, design, and right-of-way activities are underway for the project. GDOT also is hosting a series of informational meetings in the month of May focusing on improved trip time reliability around the I-285 Top End and S.R. 400 areas included in the proposed project. Construction is expected to begin in 2023 and anticipated to open to traffic in 2028.
