According to the Chicago Sun-Times, a carpenter was killed Wednesday when he was pinned under steel beams at the Wacker Drive reconstruction site. It's the first worker fatality since the project officially started earlier this year.

Raymond Sanders of west suburban Lyons, Ill., became trapped when steel forms used in the pouring of concrete bridge decks shifted near North Post Place and Wacker.

Walsh Construction sent all workers home for the day, and a safety meeting was supposedly set for Thursday morning.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the accident. Walsh said the incident was the first fatal accident in its 100-year history of doing business in the Chicago area.
