Missouri Governor Bob Holden recently unveiled his $620 million "One Missouri Transportation Plan" to fund multi-modal statewide transportation projects.

The plan is funded primarily by a three-cent state fuel tax increase, a state sales tax increase of five-eighths of a cent and a vehicle registration fee increase.

Holden's proposal includes the naming of a secretary, appointed by the governor, to head the state Department of Transportation, rather than the current six-member Highways and Transportation Committee. The proposal also would require one commissioner from each of Missouri's nine congressional districts to serve on the panel.

If the plan makes it through the legislature and is signed by the governor, voters will decide its future later this year.
