Connecticut governor releases new I-95 widening plans

Feb. 23, 2018

The plan calls for widening the southbound side of I-95 from the New York state border to Stamford, Conn.

Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy called Thursday for widening the congested I-95 in key spots in order to relieve long-running bottlenecks, starting at the New York state border and extending into southeastern Connecticut.

The plan calls for widening the southbound side of I-95 from the New York state border to Stamford, Conn.—a key commuting area in lower Fairfield County as motorists head to the major office buildings in the city. The widening would restart around exit 9 in the Glenbrook section of eastern Stamford and continue to exit 19 in Fairfield, a northbound stretch of 11 miles that would cost a projected $1.257 billion.

Another I-95 northbound stretch of 6.3 miles from Fairfield to Bridgeport would be widened, allowing travelers to reach the Rte. 8 interchange as they head to areas like Waterbury and Torrington. That stretch would cost $400 million.

Three separate lower Fairfield County projects would cost a combined $2.3 billion, and the work could start in 2022 after the projects are designed. The work could be finished by 2030.

The total cost for the projects announced Thursday is an estimated $4.3 billion.
