Join us to learn how Moffatt & Nichol modeled and designed the University of California-owned Gilman Drive Overcrossing (Gilman) Bridge in San Diego, utilizing Bentley’s RM Bridge as the primary software engine. The bridge crosses the I-5, a major California interstate. The University preferred a signature structure. The California DOT promoted a unique, eye-catching structure to coordinate with planed infrastructure improvements in the vicinity.
Moffatt & Nichol developed a 400-plus-foot concrete bridge that arches over the interstate with four slender legs and a foundation system of micropiles. To reduce thrust from arching action of the legs, the bridge employs a strut at each end, adjoining the arch abutment to the diaphragms. Moffatt & Nichol worked closely with architects to haunch the arch legs and superstructure, creating angle points and curves on the bridge to yield its slender and astonishing structural form.
The Moffatt & Nichol Bridge Design Engineers will discuss the complexities of the bridge design and how they utilized RM Bridge software not only to accurately model the bridge, but also as a powerful design/check tool for post-tensioning, component geometry, material stresses, ultimate structure capacity and more. RM Bridge makes use of many internal functions to facilitate economic bridge design. Presenter Garrett Dekker will demonstrate how he, as a first-time user of RM, can use the program successfully while establishing a foundation for the design of future bridge projects.

Gernot Komar, Dipl.-Ing., PE - Moffatt & Nichol
Komar is a Senior Bridge Engineer for Moffatt & Nichol with more than 20 years of experience in all phases of design, analysis, and erection of complex structures. He began his engineering career with TDV, now Bentley Austria in Graz. A registered professional engineer in Austria and California, he is an expert user of the RM Bridge software and has been involved in its development and improvement for many years. Due to his familiarity with the program, Moffatt & Nichol purchased RM Bridge for the design of the Gilman Bridge. His experience has involved major bridge projects all over the world, requiring in-depth knowledge and understanding of international design codes. A graduate of the Technical University of Graz, Austria as a Diplom-Ingenieur, he also holds a Masters degree in civil engineering and economics.
Garrett Dekker, PE - Moffatt & Nichol
Dekker has served the transportation industry for eight years and is a Bridge Engineer for Moffatt & Nichol. He has worked on award-winning transportation projects and specializes in project conception, design and delivery. His distinguished resume includes projects for local municipalities, state transportation departments and private enterprises. Dekker is a graduate of the University of California, San Diego, and he completed a Masters research project that explored the cost feasibility of extradosed bridges. He is a registered professional engineer in the state of California.
