Asphalt Industry Names In The News

At its Spring Meeting in Washington, DC, on April 29, 2004, the Asphalt Institute (AI) recognized four distinguished leaders from the asphalt industry with awards.

Dr. David A. Anderson, Bernard “Bernie” McCarthy, and Dr. J. Claine Petersen each were named to the Institute’s Roll of Honor for their substantial, time-proven contributions to the asphalt industry. Dr. Ron Terrel received the Distinguished Service Award for his outstanding contributions to the industry.

At its Spring Meeting in Washington, DC, on April 29, 2004, the Asphalt Institute (AI) recognized four distinguished leaders from the asphalt industry with awards.

Dr. David A. Anderson, Bernard “Bernie” McCarthy, and Dr. J. Claine Petersen each were named to the Institute’s Roll of Honor for their substantial, time-proven contributions to the asphalt industry. Dr. Ron Terrel received the Distinguished Service Award for his outstanding contributions to the industry.

“AI’s Recognition of Achievement Program showcases the extraordinary contributions of individuals within our industry,” said Pete Grass, President of the Asphalt Institute. “We all owe a debt of gratitude to these exceptional professionals for their commitment to our industry.”

Each recipient received a framed certificate in recognition of their award. The Institute also gave each recipient the first-ever Asphalt Institute award medallion, a polished brass medallion with engraved AI logo and images of the liquid asphalt supply industry. A gold ribbon signifies the Roll of Honor and a royal blue ribbon denotes the Distinguished Service Award.

Dr. David A. Anderson
Dr. Anderson is highly regarded for his work as a principal research engineer during the Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP). He was the team leader for the research group responsible for evaluating the physical properties of asphalt binders related to performance. This group developed or refined the test procedures that are part of the current Superpave performance-graded (PG) asphalt binder specification. Most of his professional career has been as a professor at West Virginia University and, since 1975, at Pennsylvania State University. Anderson has authored over 100 technical papers, many of which contributed to the understanding of physical properties of asphalt binders.

Bernard “Bernie” McCarthy, P.E.
Mr. McCarthy has been the recognized face of the Asphalt Institute for over 36 years. His first AI assignment was as the AI District Engineer for Maryland, Delaware and the District of Columbia. He was made Regional Managing Engineer for the Eastern Region in 1971 and then National Field Director for District Engineers in 1973. McCarthy was named Director of Technical Services in 1987 and then AI Vice President in 1991. McCarthy’s leadership, relationship-building skills and training of industry engineers leave a lasting legacy of service and dedication. Bernie formally retired from the Asphalt Institute in November 2003 and continues to work with the Institute as a consultant.

Dr. J. Claine Petersen
Dr. Petersen is well known for his work as a research chemist for more than 25 years with the Bureau of Mines in Laramie, Wyoming, and later as team leader of the asphalt research program at the Western Research Institute in Laramie. Petersen served as a consultant to prepare the first technical amplification of the $50 million national research program on asphalt composition and physical properties, which later became part of the Strategic Highway Research Program. Petersen continues to serve as a consultant for the Western Research Institute and a technical consultant in areas of asphalt chemistry and related technology.

Dr. Ronald L. Terrel
Dr. Terrel specializes in construction materials, waste and hazardous materials, pavements, and construction methods. Since 1985, he has been Professor Emeritus of Civil Engineering at the University of Washington and has served widely as an industry consultant. Terrel is perhaps best known in the asphalt industry for his work as a principal research engineer during the Strategic Highway Research Program. He was the team leader for the research group responsible for the evaluation of laboratory tests to determine moisture damage potential of asphalt mixtures. Terrel has authored over 150 technical papers and reports about asphalt materials, and he holds several patents.
