APAC Inc. tops contractor list

APAC Inc., Atlanta, Ga., has taken top honors as the nation's largest federal highway contractor, according to the American Road & Transportation Builders Association's (ARTBA) 9th annual ranking of the "Top 300 Federal Highway Contractors." APAC Inc. was awarded almost $510 million in federal highway work in 2003, the last year for which data are available.

The "Top 300" list is based on an ARTBA analysis of highway contract award data provided by the Federal Highway Administration. The top 20 firms include:

2. Peter Kiewit Sons' Inc., Omaha, Neb.

3. Granite Construction Co., Watsonville, Calif.

4. Edward Kraemer & Sons Inc., Plain, Wis.

5. Williams Brothers Construction Co., Houston, Texas

6. The Walsh Group Inc., Chicago, Ill.

7. Balfour Beatty Construction, Atlanta, Ga.

8. W.W. Webber Inc., Houston, Texas

9. American Bridge Co., Corapolis, Pa.

10. Tully Construction Co. Inc., Flushing, N.Y.

11. Oldcastle Materials Inc., Washington, D.C.

12. J.D. Abrams Inc., Austin, Texas

13. H.B. Zachry Construction Co., San Antonio, Texas

14. American Infrastructure, Worchester, Pa.

15. Fred Weber Inc., Maryland Heights, Mo.

16. Traylor Brothers Inc., Evansville, Ind.

17. Slattery Skanska Inc., Whitestone, N.Y.

18. General Construction Co., Poulsbo, Wash.

19. The Clark Construction Group, Bethesda, Md.

20. Vecellio Group Inc., Beckley, W.Va.
