On April 6, President Bush announced his intention to nominate three remaining appointees to a commission established under the Safe, Accountable, Flexible and Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LU). The panel is to address the programmatic and financing needs of the nation’s surface-transportation programs.

The president identified former Federal Highway Administrator Mary Peters, R. Rick Geddles, associate professor of policy analysis and management at Cornell University and Steve Odland, chairman and chief executive officer of Office Depot.

Upon President Bush’s formal nomination of these final members of the panel, the commission must by law hold its initial meeting within 30 days.
