U.S. 101 from tops to tail runs more than 800 miles along the coast of California. It is often shown in movies and television as beautiful artery connecting the state’s major cities. The longest route in California, U.S. 101 is a crucial piece of the state’s infrastructure. Unless you’re parked on the 4.4 miles between Franklin and Glendale; then it’s a small swathe of purgatory. 5.4 million hours are lost to it each year and $146 million in time-dollars kept from the state economy. Contributing to the city of Los Angeles’ smog situation is the consumption of 1.76 million gallons of gas.
