U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx and other U.S. representatives met with Mexican officials this week to discuss a proposed high-speed rail between San Antonio and Monterrey, Mexico.

The rail could provide an alternative to flying, which costs upwards of $400 round-trip, and transport riders between the cities in less than two hours. The system could also help the economies of both cities with trade and tourism. The cities are already financially connected, as Monterrey businesses have been establishing locations in northern San Antonio for some time already.

Project supporters are looking at European high-speed trains for ideas on operations and financing. There are currently no price estimates for the rail, but officials will likely rely heavily on funding from the private sector. A number of companies have already expressed interest in back the project.

Monterrey is already cleared for construction and should the plan avoid complications, the rail could be operational in six to eight years.
