TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT: I-75 getting cameras for Florida DOT's 511 Traveler Information System

May 2, 2016

The I-75 Relief Project includes equipping the roadway with traffic cameras and vehicle detection sensors

The installation of concrete poles topped with electronic equipment along I-75 from US-27 to the Alachua County line are part of the Florida Department of Transportation's (FDOT) 511 Traveler Information system, which includes real-time video and obstruction warnings aimed at notifying drivers about roadway conditions.

The system should go live in 2017. Information will be available via telephone, mobile app, website and social media.

According to Jessica Ottaviano, public information specialist with the the FDOT District Five office in DeLand, the poles and electronics are the first phase of the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) which reports road conditions to FDOT’s 511 Traveler Information system. The ITS will allow the FDOT to detect slowdowns and incidents on the interstate, and then will enable them to alert travelers.

Visitors to the 511 Travelers Information website can find real-time video views of major roads throughout the state, including in Alachua, Clay, Duval and Saint Johns counties. Marion is not currently included. Traffic, construction, emergencies, news, transit and airport information, and maps and travel time also are available through the 511 Travelers Information.

The I-75 Relief Project is an FDOT task force handling plan proposals, impact considerations and feedback for a 50-year extended plan for alternative transportation corridors linking the Tampa Bay area to Central and Northeast Florida.
