The finished 905 Freeway will be a 12-mile route to facilitate primarily truck traffic between California and Mexico from the Otay Mesa border crossing northwest to I-5.
The contract calls for construction of five bridges and the final 2.5 miles of a four-lane freeway. Sukut’s portion of the contract totals $20 million and includes site preparation, construction of retaining walls and installation of underground infrastructure, according to Kevin Maher, project manager/estimator in Sukut’s public works division. Sukut will move 1.3 million cu yd of dirt and lay 21,000 ft of storm drainpipe.
The 905 Freeway is an important commercial route that draws truck traffic prohibited at other border crossings. On the Mexican side of the crossing, 905 will link to East Tijuana highways.
