Steel girders in place for Central Susquehanna Valley Thruway bridge

Feb. 22, 2018

The nearly mile-long Pennsylvania bridge is expected to be complete in 2024

The first of the steel girders for the nearly mile-long bridge that will carry the Central Susquehanna Valley Thruway over the West Branch of the Susquehanna River in Pennsylvania are in place.

Large cranes are being used to lift the girders about 180 ft to the top of two of the piers that have been completed on the Winfield side of the bridge. A third pier has been completed but is not adjacent to the other two. Caps are being poured on two other piers. The girders will continue to be erected as the eight piers on the Winfield side are finished.

The goal for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is to have that part of the bridge mostly completed by late this summer to enable the removal of a causeway from that side of the river. Once it is removed, a causeway can be built from the Northumberland County side so construction can begin on eight other piers.

PennDOT expects the thruway section between Rte. 15 near Winfield and Rte. 147 north of Northumberland to be open in 2022.

Completion of the entire project, estimated to cost $670 million, is currently scheduled for 2024, but is subject to change.
