ROADS/BRIDGES: Weight limits for farm trucks could be lifted in Mo.

Jan. 22, 2015

State DOT worried the move could lead to bridge closures, damaged pavement

The farmers might have it a little easier in Missouri, but some officials are worried about the increased plowing on state roads.

A bill in the Missouri Senate has been introduced and would eliminate any weight restrictions for trucks carrying livestock, grain and grain co-products. Currently milk is the only product that does not come with a transport weight limit.

Missouri Department of Transportation Chief Engineer Ed Hassinger told a Senate panel that lifting the ban would be harmful to the road and bridge network in the state. Just last week MoDOT announced a scaled back budget, one that will only address about a quarter of the network. Hassinger warned any additional strain could result in bridge closures and damaged pavement.

Sen. Brian Munzlinger is sponsoring the bill and said it will help promote agriculture in the state. Senate President Tom Dempsey said the legislation is important and will be passed quickly.
