June 1, 2015

Damage to Texas infrastructure following severe storms hits $27 million and is expected to rise.

Severe storms in Texas caused at least $27 million in infrastructure damage. Texas transportation officials said that figure is expected to rise.

Roadways in 167 of the state's 254 counties suffered storm damage in May, said Veronica Beyer, a spokeswoman for the Texas Department of Transportation..

At least 155 roads in Texas were still underwater or closed due to damage following the series of storms that began Memorial Day weekend, Beyer said.

There was more than $25 million in damage to public utilities and infrastructure.

The cost to remove storm debris from bayous, flooded neighborhoods and elsewhere is about $15 million. There's another $4.5 million in damage to buildings and equipment.

Texas transportation officials have already spent about $3 million in labor and equipment. Workers have already inspected close to 100 bridges and are working to further assess damages.
