ROADS/BRIDGES: Historic Georgia bridges to be improved

Richmond County officials take advantage of Transportation Investment Act

Richmond County, Ga., has 35 projects that must be under construction by the end of 2015. Among these projects are eight bridges. Augusta Richmond County Engineering says it’s working to put federal money, facilitated by the Transportation Investment Act (TIA) to work on county infrastructure.

The historic Archibald Butt Bridge on 15th Street in downtown Augusta is among the bridges slated for improvement.

“These are old historic bridges that we are looking to restore and bring back to what they were. We are not there to replace these bridges, the architecture on them is magnificent. We can’t improve upon it all we can do is give it a face lift and bring them back to what they were,” Steve Cassell, Director of Traffic Engineering for Augusta Richmond County said.

To fund the 35 projects in phase one, TIA contributions and other funding sources will total $155 million in overall investments. The bidding process has already begun.

“These things are out to bid and we will know and make decisions based on what we get back,” Cassel said, also remarking that he expects to have the projects under construction by year’s end.
