ROADS/BRIDGES: FDOT seeks to add express toll lanes along I-4

Oct. 20, 2015

The proposed toll lanes would run through Hillsborough and Polk counties, Fla., stretching 22 miles total

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is proposing to add express toll lanes along 22 miles of I-4 between 50th street and the Polk Parkway in the Tampa Bay area.

The cost of such a project would equal approximately $500 million and aims to alleviate traffic congestion.

FDOT plans also include adding express toll lanes along I-75 and I-275. The exact amount drivers would pay has yet to be determined, but it would be based on a sliding scale.

"Depending on the amount of cars in the express lanes, the rush, the tolls will fluctuate," said FDOT spokesperson Kris Carson said.

The proposal to add toll lanes along I-4 has met some skepticism and FDOT held a public hearing to answer some of the local residents’ concerns.
