Major I-94 construction project to begin in Jackson, Mich.

July 9, 2018

The project is the first in a series to update and improve I-94

A massive $110 million road construction project kicks off Monday on a 9-mile stretch of I-94 in the Jackson, Mich., area.

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) plans to reconstruct 1.4 miles of freeway between Lansing Avenue and Elm Road, resurface 3.5 miles between Lansing Avenue and M-60, and resurface four miles between Elm Road and Sargent Road. MDOT also plans to redesign the I-94/Cooper Street interchange and replace a bridge that runs over the Grand River.

During construction, MDOT says it plans to keep two lanes of traffic open in each direction for most of the time. There could also be some single-lane closures during off-peak hours.

The current project is the first in a series to update and improve I-94. It is expected to last through the 2019 construction season. According to MDOT, the Jackson area gets much more state, national and international trade traffic than it did when the freeway first opened to traffic nearly 60 years ago.
