CEMEX supplies largest bridge ever in Los Angeles

March 28, 2019—CEMEX USA announced it is providing concrete, including a specialized self-consolidating mix, along with thousands of tons of aggregates for the largest bridge project in the history of Los Angeles, Calif.—the replacement of the iconic Sixth Street Viaduct Bridge. The original 3,500-ft bridge, which has served as a backdrop in several feature films, was built in 1932 as a vital transportation link across the Los Angeles River to connect Boyle Heights with the Arts District. Over the years, the structure has deteriorated, leading to several repairs and now, the current replacement process. CEMEX is expected to supply 45,000 cu yd of ready-mix concrete for the Sixth Street Viaduct Replacement Project, including 6,300 cu yd of specialized self-consolidating mix concrete that was developed to fit the bridge’s design specifications and stringent standards required by Caltrans. CEMEX is also supplying fiber concrete for the structure itself and bridge deck. When finished, the new viaduct is expected to have 10 pairs of lit arches along with stairway access and bike ramps.
