Winner:

E-470/I-70 Interchange
Roads & Bridges magazine (RB)

WINNER: E-470/I-70 Interchange

E-470/I-70 Interchange
Aurora, Colo.

Cost: $43 million
Length: 2 miles
Designer: DMJM Harris
Contractor: Lawrence Construction Co.
Owner: E-470 Public Highway Authority

A curved bridge can have the same nasty spin as a curve ball. Fortunately those involved in the E-470/I-70 interchange project made solid contact on a solution. By choosing a post-tensioned segmental concrete tub girder design, the construction team solved the technical complexity of the 1,600-ft-long curved bridge over I-70. Another challenge involved the mitigation of high swelling soils in the area. Engineered fill material and sub-drains solved the problem.
