It’s where you draw the line that makes a difference. To minimize right-of-way impacts, the Tollway’s design team moved the centerline by 20 ft. The move complicated staging and construction, because moving the line caused temporary construction to fall out of alignment with the existing pavement, but it saved time and money and eliminated the need to impact current property owners. “Work-arounds” were developed in areas needing additional ROW or permitting. The realignment included a new 936-ft-long curved girder bridge to carry two lanes of ramp traffic into the center of westbound I-88.
