  • About round design

Transoft Solutions, Vancouver, B.C., has launched its roundabout design software, Torus. Powered by the AutoTURN engine and the result of two years of development, Torus is the first swept-path roundabout geometry designing software. Designing modern roundabouts is an iterative process. It is a balancing act between geometry, operational performance and safety. Traditionally, this balancing act has been a labour-intensive manual exercise. Torus was developed around dynamic editing tools to give a user the ability to considerably reduce the number of iterations needed while receiving immediate feedback on fastest drive paths and critical sightlines as the result of design changes. Torus provides users with the ability to instantly visualize the effect of minor changes on traffic safety as well as the operational performance of a roundabout’s design.

    Spider satellite

Leica GNSS Spider V3.2 provides improved compatibility with GPS L2C and GLONASS satellite signals provided by third-party receivers. In addition, Leica GNSS Spider enables any manufacturers’ rover systems to seamlessly use both networked and single-base GPS GLONASS correction data. Leica GNSS Spider V3.2, from Leica Geosystems Inc., Norcross, Ga., is the first GNSS Network infrastructure solution currently providing text messaging from the network to rover users in the field. The rover messaging service uses a standard RTCM message to transport Unicode text messages from Leica GNSS Spider to any rover system’s user, enabling the network operator to conveniently send clients information such as the status of the network, scheduled updates and new services.

    Flag pole

The new Pole Transport Marker, from Hi-Line Utility Supply Co., Elgin, Ill., provides increased visibility for the transportation of utility poles on public highways and will help keep the user in compliance with regulations. The product consists of two flags combined with a tamper-resistant warning light, which is available with either amber or red lenses and features two modes: steady-on or flash mode. The light provides optimum visibility of up to 1,000 ft in daylight. The Pole Transport Marker is lightweight, highly visible, rugged, safe, cost effective and energy efficient. The Pole Transport Marker meets regulations for most departments of transportation.

    Video by fiber

Communication Networks of Danbury, Conn., (ComNet) has released another series of fiber-optic video products. The FVR11 and FVR10 are fiber-optic video receivers for use over multimode optical fiber. Either model receives a single base-band video channel as an optical signal from up to 2.5 km to where it is converted back to base-band video for monitoring. The difference is that the FVR10 features a manual gain adjustment and is more cost-effective than the FVR11. The FVR11 features automatic gain control, which automatically adjusts to changes in the camera output that might degrade the video quality. Both are new designs from utilizing state-of-the-art components to ensure better performance and reliability.

    See your speed

The new SpeedSentry Shield, from All Traffic Solutions, State College, Pa., with 15-in. digits is incredibly compact, measuring at just 24 × 17 × 3.12 in. and weighing only 22 lb, including its battery. Lithium-ion batteries provide longer life in a smaller package. It can use solar assist or AC supply for more permanent installations. The Shield’s welded aluminum enclosure, shatterproof shield, impact-absorbing corners and graffiti-resistant powder-coat make it even tougher than our regular SpeedSentry. Visibility remains high thanks to auto-dimming 30° LEDs that combine with glare-resistant, UV-protected Lexan for increased contrast and digit readability. It can be programmed simply with a wireless PDA or its onboard buttons.
