Design-build team announced for WSDOT U.S. 12 bridge replacement

Sept. 7, 2018

Stantec and Graham Contracting will work with the agency to replace the Wildcat Creek Bridge

Stantec, a global engineering, consulting and construction firm, recently announced that it will be leading the design of the comprehensive bridge replacement project of Wildcat Creek Bridge, on U.S. 12 east of White Pass, Wash., for the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) in collaboration with Graham Contracting.

The existing 150-ft bridge crossing was originally built in 1936 and is showing signs of deterioration due to age and normal wear. The project aims to replace the existing bridge to preserve the functional and structural integrity of this section of the highway, while ensuring safe and reliable transportation on U.S. 12 over White Pass. The design-build team of Graham Contracting and Stantec will work with WSDOT to develop effective design and construction methods to accelerate the bridge replacement timeline while reducing impacts to the environment, traffic and the surrounding community.

“We are thrilled to be partnering with Graham Contracting to assist WSDOT with this significant bridge reconstruction project,” said Richard Patterson, Stantec’s transportation senior associate based in Bellevue, Wash., in a release. “The Wildcat Creek Bridge is an important transportation connection point on U.S. 12 in Washington, and our team is excited to begin work on this milestone project.”

During the extremely tight 17-day construction window, Stantec and Graham Contracting will closely collaborate with WSDOT to minimize construction impacts to the traveling public, local businesses, and the environment. Graham and Stantec developed a project solution to replace the existing bridge with a large buried culvert to provide a fish and wildlife passable structure in this remote location. The project will include design and implementation of a precast concrete arch structure, MSE retaining walls, paving, striping, signing, maintenance of traffic, roadside restoration, and coordination with stakeholders.

The project is expected to be completed by mid-October 2018.
