Mendocino County, CA Sign Upgrades Reduce Crashes . Mendocino County is located on the north coast of California approximately 100 miles north of San Francisco. The Mendocino County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) is responsible for maintaining approximately 1,000 miles of secondary roads that serve 87,000 local residents. The terrain is mountainous, and many of the crashes involved vehicles running off the road at curves.

United Rentals Inc., Missoula, Mont., has turned to the Nitestar Distance Measuring Instrument (DMI) for everyday operations and to improve efficiency at work sites. The Nitestar DMI, from Nu-Metrics Inc , a member of Quixote Transportation Technologies Inc., is a lightweight tool that measures distance and speed and displays the information on liquid crystal panels.
