    Winners will be honored at paving innovation live event Sept. 22-23
    August 13, 2009

    Roads & Bridges magazine has selected the winners of its Top 10 Roads awards program for 2009. The top projects will be formally announced Sept. 22, 2009, at Roads & Bridges Live: Paving Innovations, and showcased in the magazine’s October issue.

    “Even though the road construction industry has suffered through a back-breaking recession over the past year, the quality of applicants were as strong as ever,” said R&B Editorial Director Bill Wilson. “The North/Central Tri-State Tollway project is one of the most intense and complex jobs this Top 10 program has ever recognized.”

    The Top 10 Roads list for 2009 is as follows: No. 1 ⎯ North/Central Tri-State Tollway (I-94/I-294) Rebuild & Widen Project, Cook and Lake Counties, Ill.; No. 2 ⎯ Rte. U.S. 1 & 9: Rahway River Bridge and Sections 1K and 3M, Township of Woodbridge, N.J., City of Rahway, N.J., and City of Linden, N.J.; No. 3 ⎯ Green Wood Lake Turnpike, West Milford, N.J.; No. 4 ⎯ I-15 Express Lanes, San Diego; No. 5 ⎯ I-75 Design-Build-Finance Project (iROX), Collier and Lee Counties, Fla.; No. 6 ⎯ Ulmerton Road Phase 2, St. Petersburg, Fla.; No. 7 ⎯ U.S. 60, Gonzales Pass, Superior, Ariz.; No. 8 ⎯ I-86/U.S. Rte. 15 Interchange Reconstruction, Painted Post, N.Y.; No. 9 ⎯ I-64 Battlefield Blvd., Chesapeake, Va.; No. 10 — State Rte. 68, Salt Lake and Utah Counties, Utah. Each project was of concrete, Superpave or asphalt origin.

    North American road projects ranging from $8.5 million to over $1 billion were nominated by design firms, DOTs and engineers. To be considered for the competition, all projects were required to be in the design or construction phase within the past 18 months. Entries were accepted April 2009 – July 2009, with winners determined by the R&B editorial staff.

    The Roads & Bridges Live: Paving Innovations live event will be hosted by Roads & Bridges on Sept. 22-23 in Chicago, Ill. The two-day session will focus on the several facets of the paving industry, including the recycling/reclaiming; base stabilization; warm-mix asphalt; concrete paving; accelerated road construction; road maintenance; and concrete overlays.
