The Design-Build Institute of America has named Hardesty & Hanover’s 14th Street Bascule Bridge Rehabilitation Project as 2007’s Best Design-Build Project under $50 million.

Hardesty & Hanover provided rehabilitation design engineering services for this 1964 double leaf, Hopkins Trunnion type bascule span bridge. H&H teamed with PCL Constructors Inc. to design and construct the project. H&H developed the construction plans and specifications to implement the $5 million rehabilitation to the bridge and provide post design engineering services during construction. Replacement of the stringers and floorbeams in lieu of repair was proven by competitive bid to be a more cost effective solution. The rehabilitation included bascule span floor system replacement, grating replacement, including concrete wheel paths and bicycle lane grating, bridge barrier replacement, pedestrian railing replacement, structural steel painting, control house aesthetic improvements and substructure repairs. Emergency repairs were accomplished on the bascule girders due to unknown deterioration to the girder webs behind connection plates.
The Design-Build Institute, founded in 1993, is an association of design and construction industry leaders interested in developing excellent projects by using design-build and other integrated project delivery methods. The Institute sponsors the annual Design-Build Expo to educate leaders in the design and construction industries on Design-Build project management and to award outstanding projects that utilized design-build or another integrated project delivery method. According to the expo website, “Winning projects are honored for their advanced and innovative application of total integrated project delivery and finding unique solutions for project challenges.”
