The Emergency Management Department of Collier County, Fla., debuted plans for a new $30 million Emergency Operations Center in May, the Naples Daily News reported.

The 84,000-sq-ft center would consolidate several agencies, among them the traffic management and 9-1-1 operations. The bunker-like building would have 8-in.-thick walls and be able to withstand a Category 5 hurricane.

“Houston, Texas, integrated their traffic management center with their emergency operations center,” said Dan Summers, director of the county’s emergency management department. “It’s one of the nation’s premier traffic management systems and it works great. We can do the same thing in Collier County with this design.”

The county’s emergency management department and emergency operations center will have 12,000 sq ft in the new building, including space for visiting FEMA or National Guard personnel.

The county’s 9-1-1 staff will get 11,000 sq ft to call their own. There will be 1,800 sq ft for the traffic operations center, 2,000 sq ft for the county’s information technology network headquarters and 800 sq ft for the county Clerk of Courts computer equipment and two technicians.

Emergency medical services personnel will gain 10,000 sq ft including classrooms.

The building also will house 4,000 sq ft for a small television production studio and press briefing area for the county. The county commission still needs to grant final approval of the plans.
