1. Q: Is there a concrete contractor directory? A:
One is available on the American Concrete Pavement Association's website. The Member Products & Services Directory can be accessed by entering keywords such as "admixture" or "contractor" plus the desired state.
2. Q: What is the cause of cracking in concrete pavement? A:
New concrete slabs crack whenever tensile stresses building up within the concrete overcome the tensile strength. The tensile stresses develop from restraint of the concrete's volume change at early ages and restraint of bending from temperature and moisture gradients through the concrete. Early volume changes are associated with the concrete's drying shrinkage and
temperature contraction. Most cracks form at planned locations where contraction joints are placed in the slabs.
3. Q: What tests are available for new concrete? A:
Slump test;
Temperature Measurement;
Unit Weight and Yield;
Air Content;
Strength Tests;
Water/Cement Ratio;
Time of Setting;
Accelerated Curing;
Chloride Content; and
Bleeding of Concrete.
4. Q: What strength tests are available? A:
Flexural Tests;
Compressive Tests; and
Splitting Tensile Tests.
5. Q: Where can I locate a California profilograph? A:
Go to the American Concrete Pavement Association website, type in key words "Calif" or "profil" and you'll receive information for an ACPA member who specializes in that product.
