One of Hawaii’s bridges is getting some rehabilitation work done to it. The Kamehameha Bridge No. 603 in Haleiwa, otherwise known as the Rainbow Bridge will undergo work beginning April 29 according to the city and county of Honolulu’s Department of Design and Construction.
The bridge was originally built in 1921 to replace a wooden bridge.
The rehabilitation work includes concrete delamination and crack repairs, installing cathodic protection anodes, and painting. The work is expected to continue for one year. The goal is to protect the bridge from corrosion and improve its structural integrity.
Motorists should expect work to begin on April 29 between the hours of 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
The bridge will remain open to vehicles during construction. One sidewalk will be closed at all times with the other open to pedestrians. A temporary lane closure may be implemented if necessary.
During the construction period, recreational use of the waterway will be maintained along about half of the bridge span between the Kahuku abutment and center pier or the Waialua abutment and center pier, according to a news release.
More rehabilitation work is to be done in Hawaii. The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HIDOT) is planning to rehabilitate the Hakalau Stream Bridge, part of Highway 19 along the Hamakua coast.
The project will increase resilience to extreme natural disasters.
According to a document from HIDOT, the bridge would not be widened and the traffic capacity would not increase.
HIDOT is proposing resurfacing Old Mamalahoa Highway and Old Mill Access Road due to possible pavement damage that is anticipated with construction.
The project has a cost of approximately $70 million.
